5009 neue Wörter: “Fake News” und “Selfie” im Duden

Von “Lügenpresse” über den “Selfiestick” zur “Flüchtlingskrise”. In der neuen Auflage ist der Wortschatz um 5000 Wörter erweitert worden. Die zusätzlichen Wörter sind unter anderem auf die politischen Debatten der letzten Jahre zurückzuführen, aber auch auf Wörter englischen Ursprungs, wie “Fake News” und “Selfie”.

Die neue Ausgabe hat übrigens 145’000 Stichwörter. Wieviele hatte die Urfassung von 1880? 27’000 …

Computer

Denken Sie, dass das Wort aus dem 20. Jahrhundert stammt und somit relativ neu ist? Wir wissen heute alle, was mit einem Computer gemeint ist. Doch erstaunlicherweise stammt das Wort aus dem 17. Jahrhundert! Es beschreibt eine Person, die darauf spezialisiert war komplexe Kalkulationen durchzuführen. Ein menschlicher Computer also.

Hobbit

Eine Spezies kleiner charmanter Lebewesen? Hinter diesem Wort verbirgt sich tatsächlich das Volk der Hobbits, wie sie J.R.R. Tolkien erfunden hat. Aber damit ist die Wortherkunft nicht geklärt. Denn J.R.R. Tolkien hat das Wort gar nicht erfunden. Zum einen verstand man unter dem Hobbit (oder Hobbet) einen Korb voller Saatgut und zum anderen eine lokale Masseinheit. Das Ursprungsjahr dieser Bedeutungen ist 1863, also fast ein Jahrhundert früher als in “Der Herr der Ringe”.
